Water is Life Summary

The Wum (Cameroon) Water Project was initiated in 2007 in partnership with the University of Virginia and the Rotary Club of Charlottesville.  To date, the people of Wum dug 2.3 kilometers of the 9.6 kilometers of ditches needed to lay the piping, completing Phase I of the project.

The Wum water project is the largest water project  initiated by the University of Virginia  School of Engineering and The Rotary Clubs of Virginia. When completed, this simple gravity -fed system  will provide access to sustainable and safe water to a town of 50,000 people in Wum, Cameroon.  The project will reduce  child mortality (currently 500 per year due to lack of clean water) and an improved quality of life.

The partnership with the University of Virginia's School of Engineering and the Rotary Clubs of Charlottesville, Virginia. has been a win-win situation.

From Rotary's perspective, it provides a channel to achieve its international mission of providing sustainable and clean water throughout the world. Rotary matches every dollar contributed by three and provides international oversight and audits.

From the University's point of view, it provides engineering students with a "real world" engineering experience within a global context.
